Shade matching and filling material evaluation

Why your filling might not be the same material as the last one

We use different materials for different jobs.

For highly esthetic areas, such as your front teeth, we use a filling material with a chameleon effect for optimal esthetics.

If you have a high decay risk, I will use a bioactive material that helps fight new cavity formation. That is the whole decision. Decay risk versus optimal esthetics and polishability.

    Checking worn teeth

    Worn teeth

Teeth wear down. Grinding does it, acid does it, and years of use does it too. Two or three millimetres shorter is enough to change how your teeth meet each other and risk irreversible nerve damage. This is why we would raise tooth wear with you. Whether you do anything about it is your call.

    Examining cracked and broken teeth

    Cracked and broken teeth

A tooth can crack without hurting, and it can hurt without anything showing. What we do about it depends on how deep the crack runs and whether the nerve is involved. Sometimes the answer is a filling. Sometimes it is a crown. Sometimes the tooth needs a root canal first and a crown after. We will look, and we will tell you which one you are.

    Crowns, bridges and dentures consultation

    Crowns, bridges and dentures

A crown covers a tooth that has lost too much structure to hold a filling or is cracked. The tooth is still yours and it stays where it is. A crown is what saves it. Bridges and dentures do a different job. They replace missing teeth. A bridge anchors a replacement tooth to the teeth on either side of the gap.

A bridge is permanently cemented in your mouth. A denture replaces several missing teeth and it is removed nightly. Which one suits you depends on how many teeth are missing and on the condition of the ones still there. Dr. Fenn will go through it with you.

    Root canal treatment

    Root canals

A root canal treats the nerve inside a tooth after it has become infected or died. The tooth stays in your mouth. That is the point of doing one.

Dr. Fenn does root canal treatment here, and she is an active member of the George Hare Endodontic Study Club. Some cases are better handled by an endodontist. If yours is one of them, she will say so and refer you.

    What gets done first

We will show you what we see and sort it into two groups. Some things need treating soon, because they get worse if they are left. Decay that is getting bigger, an infection, or a tooth that is cracking or breaking. Other things can wait, like changes to how your teeth look. They are not causing harm right now.

You decide if and when to do them, and we will help you plan the order. You do not have to do all of it. You do have to know about all of it.

    What it costs

If you have private insurance, we submit your claim electronically for you. You pay us at the appointment, and your insurer reimburses you.

We also accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan, and we bill CDCP directly so you are not chasing the paperwork afterwards. One thing worth knowing before you come in. The plan pays against a government fee schedule, and our fees follow the Ontario Dental Association fee guide, which is higher than the CDCP schedule. There is a difference in what you pay. Most dentists in Ontario work this way. We would rather you hear it now than at the desk afterwards.

We take cash, debit, Visa and Mastercard.

    Dental consultation with Dr. Fenn

Request a consultation with Dr. Fenn

Email us a photo of what is bothering you and tell us what is going on. Dr. Fenn will look and tell you what she thinks it might be and what to do next. You do not have to be a patient here to ask.

A photo will not always be enough. If she needs to see it properly, she will say so, and the next step is a full examination with x-rays. If you are in pain, call us instead. That is not something to wait on an email for.
