    Complete oral examination

What a complete oral examination involves

A complete oral examination covers your teeth, your gums, the bone supporting your teeth, and your TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder). We take updated radiographs and a scan of your teeth to give us an overall view. We review your medical history and any medications you take.

We talk about what you want and what you are worried about. Then we build a treatment plan around all of that, for you.

A new patient examination is generally 80 minutes at our office.

    Dental radiographs inspection

What X-rays show that looking cannot

Radiographs show us bone loss, decay, calculus below the gumline, infection and pathology. None of that is visible in a mirror.

We only take digital radiographs, which use less radiation than traditional film.

    iTero digital scanner 3D model

    The scan

Some dental impressions still get taken with a tray of putty that you hold in your mouth while it sets. We use a digital iTero scanner instead. It photographs your teeth and builds a 3-D model on-screen, so you can see what we see while it happens.

    In-person oral diagnosis

Why a photo, or ten minutes, is not a diagnosis

A photo can show a broken tooth. It cannot show the health of that tooth’s nerve, or the health of the bone holding it. A photo is useful. It does not replace a radiograph or an examination in person. Ten minutes is enough for a look and a conversation. It is not enough to assess a mouth you have never seen before.

How often you need a cleaning

How often you need a cleaning depends on your mouth, not on an insurer's schedule. Some people are fine once every 9 months. Some people need it every three or four months, usually because of gum disease or a high decay risk.

We will tell you what we see and what interval makes sense for you. If your insurance covers a different number, you can still decide what you want to do.

    What it costs

If you have private insurance, we submit your claim electronically for you. You pay us at the appointment, and your insurer reimburses you.

We also accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan, and we bill CDCP directly so you are not chasing the paperwork afterwards. One thing worth knowing before you come in. The plan pays against a government fee schedule, and our fees follow the Ontario Dental Association fee guide, which is higher than the CDCP schedule. There is a difference in what you pay. Most dentists in Ontario work this way. We would rather you hear it now than at the desk afterwards.

We take cash, debit, Visa and Mastercard.

    Children

We see kids here for check-ups and cleanings, for fillings and repairs, and for Invisalign when they are ready for it.

    Dental consultation with Dr. Fenn

Request a consultation with Dr. Fenn

Email us a photo of what is bothering you and tell us what is going on. Dr. Fenn will look and tell you what she thinks it might be and what to do next. You do not have to be a patient here to ask.

A photo will not always be enough. If she needs to see it properly, she will say so, and the next step is a full examination with x-rays. If you are in pain, call us instead. That is not something to wait on an email for.
